As defined in the UGC Act 1956 under section 2(f), University means a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act or a State Act.

Amity University Uttar Pradesh has been established by Government of State of Uttar Pradesh under the Amity University Uttar Pradesh Act, 2005 (UP Act NO. 11 of 2005), notified in the Uttar Pradesh Official Gazette No. 403/ VII-V.I-1(Ka)1/2005 dated 24 March 2005.

As per section 22(1) of UGC Act 1956, a University thus established under a Central Act or a State Act has the right to confer or grant Degrees.

  1. A university duly established under an Act of the Legislature does not require AICTE approval, as per the Law and the Supreme Court judgment.
  2. Wherever recognition by Statutory Bodies is required, Amity University has obtained such recognitions e.g. :-
    • Law Programmes approved by Bar Council of India
    • Architectural Programmes approved by Council of Architecture
    • Educational Programmes approved by National Council of Teachers Education
    • Distance Education Programmes approved by Distance Education Council
    • Amity University has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation by DSIR, Ministry of Science Technology, Government of India.

Amity University has valid license from Distance Education Council (DEC), Govt of India, vide their letter no. DEC/9174/AMITY/09 dated 28.1.09 granting Amity University has a status of recognized institution to conduct distance education by providing continued provisional recognition for the second successive year.
